The ex-lawyer for the former president has stepped down as New Jersey's top federal prosecutor. This decision was prompted by a judicial decision that questioned her right to occupy the role.
Official Departure
The head of the Justice Department, the Attorney General, confirmed Habba's resignation on the start of the week. She commented that the judicial decision made it unworkable for her to lead the department effectively.
"Do not interpret compliance for surrender," she wrote. "The effort will now extend throughout the country."

Her resignation was triggered by a judicial panel determined that she had been acting without proper authority as the top prosecutor. This ruling is expected to impact numerous prosecutions in the state.
The court said that a acting appointment that bypassed Senate approval breached the federal law governing appointments.

Bondi said that she will remain at the justice department as a senior adviser. She will pursue additional appeals of the disqualification, in the hope of achieving a different outcome.
Writing online, Bondi argued that the judiciary "cannot be permitted to second-guess the executive's selection of lawyers tasked with carrying out the fundamental role of the presidency of enforcing the law."

She highlighted the prosecutor's work and noted that under her leadership, the state capital of Newark saw a 20% reduction in offenses. She also stated that the Camden experienced its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 without a homicide.
Connection to Donald Trump
Habba, 41, first joined the former president's legal defense in recent years. She went on to represented Trump in his New York criminal case in the previous year, which resulted in his conviction on multiple felony counts of falsifying business records.
Prior to assuming the role of US Attorney, the former president had stated he was selecting her as his presidential counsellor if re-elected, describing Habba as "unwavering in her loyalty" and a relentless legal advocate.
