Eurovision Was Once a Campy Joy – However It Has Transformed Into a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.
An new initialism surfaced several months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for medical staff to attend to a minor who has seen the death of their whole family. Yet, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of child amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing ordinary about scores of doctors arriving back from a sea of ruins with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Supposed Ceasefire
Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that atrocities are continuing. Authorities has denied these allegations, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is charged with. Yet as traumatised orphans are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from pursuing its declared purpose of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, we are told, is what unity manifests as.
The contest, notably prohibited Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.
A Double Standard
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what could be seen as an attempt to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza recently. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Overlook the situation that international journalists are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering
Eurovision marks seven decades next year – roughly two times the projected longevity of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
