Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
