Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 lives perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when gunmen fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been publicly named, but authorities state their ages range from 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Described as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, a senior official expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
