Instructor Fatally Shot and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, police confirmed.
The attackers "confronted officers on duty in a firefight" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their hostel, according to a statement.
A school employee was lost their life while safeguarding the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to generate terror.
Community members disclosed to media that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and local protection units" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is presently taking place in adjacent wooded areas and believed flight corridors.
In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for weapon-carrying factions, who frequently execute kidnappings to request monetary settlements or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
